OCC Women’s Volleyball Makes it to Final Four at NJCAA National Tournament

The top four ranked teams, both in the nation and in national tournament seeding, have wvballadvanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-II National Tournament, which is being held at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio.

In the first round of quarterfinals, No. 3 Johnson County Community College (30-6) defeated No. 11 Des Moines Area Community College 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 to become the first semifinal team. Des Moines Area had upset No. 6 Glendale 27-29, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13 earlier in the day. Johnson County has won four straight matches – all in the postseason.
Des Moines Area will take on #10 Grand Rapids Community College (the defending national champion) at 2 p.m. Friday in the consolation bracket.
In the second quarterfinal, No. 2 Parkland College (51-2) defeated Grand Rapids Community College to assure a new national champion. Parkland avenged a five set loss to GRCC in last year’s national semifinal and a five set loss to GRCC earlier this season. The Cobras have now won 38 straight matches.
No. 3 Johnson County will take on No. 2 Parkland College tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. in the national semifinals.

In the third quarterfinal, No. 4 Oakland Community College (36-2) defeated Southwestern Community College 25-22, 25-21, 25-14.  Oakland has now won five straight.

In the final quarterfinal, No. 1 Cowley County (33-4) defeated Central Community College 25-14, 26-24, 25-21. Cowley has now won 12 straight.
No. 1 Cowley County will take on No. 4 Oakland Community College at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the other national semifinal, while Central will take on Southwestern at 2 p.m. Friday in the consolation bracket.
The winner of each semifinal will meet in the national championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
