Join Royal Oak/Southfield Student LIFE for a panel discussion on women, leadership and politics. The event is 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, at the Royal Oak Campus Theater and is sponsored by Royal Oak Student LIFE, the OCC Womencenter and the Royal Oak/Southfield Campus Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
The panel discussion is facilitated by OCC External Affairs Vice Chancellor Sharon Miller.
State Representative Vicki Barnett
Before coming to the House, Barnett served on the Farmington Hills City Council from 1995 to 2003 and as Mayor of Farmington Hills from 2003 to 2007. As mayor, Barnett worked with state and federal officials to improve police, fire, and emergency communications. A former investment consultant, Barnett also served as the president of the Michigan Municipal League, Chair of the Data Advisory Council for the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and as a board member of the National League of Cities.
City of Oak Park Councilwoman Kiesha Speech
Councilwoman Kiesha Speech began her political career in 2009 when she was elected as a Precinct Delegate in Oak Park Precinct 5. In 2011, she ran and was elected to serve as a School Board Trustee of the Oak Park School District. She was honored shortly after, to be elected as the School Board Secretary by the other Board members. And in November 2013 she was elected to serve as a member of the Oak Park City Council. Kiesha currently works as the District Director for State Representative, Rudy Hobbs.
Oakland County Commissioner, District 18, Helaine Zack
Commissioner Zack is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s undergraduate and graduate social work schools. Zack has been a social worker active in the employee assistance program field for more than 30 years. She is a frequent trainer and advocate for Mental Health, Health, Substance Abuse, Domestic Violence, Trauma Intervention and Environmental concerns. She has been married to Andrew, an attorney, for more than 30 years and has three adult daughters and two son-in-laws.
Ellen Cogen Lipton is serving her third term as State Representative for the 27th House District. Rep. Lipton, is a patent attorney and Harvard Law graduate. She has served on a number of boards in the community, including as the public representative on the State Board of Accountancy. She lives in Huntington Woods with her husband, Marc, and their two children, Corey and Celia.
