Community members were able to get a taste of the many capabilities of the Combined Regional Emergency Services Training (CREST) last week at an OCC Economic and Workforce Development Low Ropes Course and Teambuilding Training.
The event featured breakfast and networking, a tour of CREST and a ropes course.
About 40 participants attended from area work places including Oakland Schools, Oakland University, Chrysler, Broner, Brightwing, Urban Science, Pulse 220, the City of Southfield and the City of Rochester Hills.
“It was meant to promote the low ropes course to companies as well as the endless opportunities with customized teambuilding with CREST,” said Elizabeth Tomaszewski, OCC Economic and Workforce Development Project Manager. “This year we have hosted a group of resident doctors from Henry Ford Health Systems in a customized teambuilding event that included rappelling, search and rescue and customized EMS Scenarios. EWD wants to promote these fun, out-of-the-box teambuilding opportunities to the community.
“We wanted to see if it would be a good opportunity for our company in terms of leadership and training,” said Rob Grozenski, a business developer at Brightwing. “I thought it was well organized, friendly and gave you a good sense what a team would accomplish.”
Donna Preston, Chief Operating Officer at Broner, Inc., is looking forward to trying out the training with company staff.
“I was interested in the low ropes course, to see if it would work for a team of 30 people or see if it would be intimidating. The event cleared things up in my mind. It reinforced my feelings that it would be a wonderful opportunity. It was well organized and it would be wonderful for our company.”
Amy Flynn, a Postsecondary Training Consultant with Oakland Schools, said she and her colleague Cynthia Scherphorn, were excited about future possibilities at CREST.
“Cindy and I enjoyed learning about CREST and the low ropes course and see multiple ways to incorporate this into our curriculum. We plan to pursue further visits for our staff and students, as teamwork and collaboration are excellent foundations for maximizing learning!
