Oakland Community College invites members of the public to its Self Defense for Women workshop, designed to increase knowledge, self-confidence, common sense, protection strategies for preventing attack and effective fight and escape techniques to use in case of assault.
The workshop is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014, in J Building, Room 305, at Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus, 27055 Orchard Lake Road, south of I-696 in Farmington Hills.
Self-defense expert Jaye Spiro conducts the session. Ms. Spiro holds a sixth-degree black belt in Karate and is known nationally for her self-defense programs.
Women of all ages (13 years of age and older), sizes, and fitness abilities are encouraged to attend. Mothers and daughters are welcome, as well as young women preparing for or attending college or considering study abroad.
The workshop is $40 and pre-registration is required. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a lunch and water.
Self Defense for Women is sponsored by the Womencenter, a facility that provides educational and supportive resources for area women.
