Oakland Community College (OCC) invites the public to join faculty, staff, and students to a special event honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 12, 2018.
The convocation, sponsored by the College Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, will feature:

- Guest Speaker: Sommer Woods, Vice President for External Relations, Marketing and Communications for M-1 Rail (QLINE) in Detroit. Her responsibilities include workforce development, community engagement/inclusion, governmental relations, and minority/Detroit based business procurement. She has been instrumental in ensuring that minority and women-owned businesses are given an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the business opportunities associated with the development of Detroit. Woods is the recipient of the Dave Bing Future Leader Awards for the 2017 Shining Light Awards.
Woods, 40, is a graduate of Mercy High School in Farmington, and Talladega College in Alabama, which she attended on a golf scholarship and from which she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business. She later studied urban planning and development at Georgia State University before working with the PGA tour for four years, a job that ultimately brought her back to Detroit to work with the Super Bowl XL committee. This job, in turn, led to a position in Mayor Dave Bing’s administration, serving as the film, culture and special events director for the City of Detroit.
